Pet Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery can address many common orthopedic issues such as treatment of lameness, musculoskeletal trauma and deformity, and paralysis. Some orthopedic surgeries performed by our veterinarians are:

  • Arthroscopic surgery
  • Fracture repair using plates/screws, pins and/or internal or external fixators
  • Extracapsular repair of cruciate ligament injury in small dogs
  • Patellar Luxation correction
  • Closed and open repair of joint luxations
  • Ligament & tendon reconstruction
  • Bone graftingArthrodesis (joint fusion)
  • Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO)

Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy

This is a technique for the treatment of anterior cruciate ligament tears in dogs and is the recommended treatment for most patients with ACL injury. One of the important functions of the anterior cruciate ligament is to prevent forward and backward sliding of the femur on the tibia bone, also know as drawer motion. The leveling of the plateau eliminates the need for the anterior cruciate ligament.

Rupture of this ligament leads to debilitating lameness. TPLO surgery compared to other techniques results in:

  • A more rapid recovery
  • Better range of motion of the joint
  • Development of less arthritis
  • Return to athletic or working activity more quickly and more predictably
